Cody Rhodes had left the WWE and it felt like he had gone out and started his own promotion to compete against the WWE and it was working. Cody should have been the first AEW Champion, he seemed like the original AEW star.
The other wrestler that was drawing me to AEW was all the talk about Kenny Omega. The fact that Chris Jericho left the WWE to wrestle Kenny Omega really got my attention. But it should have been Cody and Kenny in the main event of AEW for the championship right from the start.
The fact that Daniel Bryan also chose to leave the WWE to head over to AEW really seemed to shock the wrestling world as well and this really gave AEW the chance to start having some major feuds and potential matches of the year.
Still, that wasn’t the moment that made me start watching and become an AEW fan, that moment was when they managed to sign CM Punk, my favourite wrestler. I could picture the main event instantly between Daniel Bryan and CM Punk for the AEW Championship. Hell, I could picture them winning the Tag Team Championships as well. From there feuds with Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes, even Chris Jericho.
So many other WWE stars had moved over to AEW like Dean Ambrose, Cesaro, Rusev, eventually even Edge. With all of that talent in AEW they should be major competition for the WWE, not just NXT. But it seems like they aren’t booking those major feuds like I had expected. Worst of all, they lost the biggest stars and the main wrestlers that were making me watch AEW…Cody Rhodes and CM Punk. It’s funny that now as I write this, CM Punk is currently the WWE World Champion, and Cody Rhodes is the WWE Champion, arguably the two biggest stars in the WWE… and AEW lost them both.
