CM Punk vs AJ Styles
This should be the main event of Wrestlemania. I would have CM Punk vs Cody Rhodes, title for title, at the Royal Rumble and have Punk with the WWE Championship. On the same night I would have AJ Styles win the mens Royal Rumble match to get his title shot in the main event of Wrestlemania. The show would end with these two face to face in the ring. It would be an epic moment. AJ Styles made his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble exactly 10 years ago, the timing would be perfect for him to finally win that event.
Royal Rumble Title Match - CM Punk vs Cody Rhodes (Title vs Title)
Starting the plan to reduce titles in the WWE with the biggest titles of all, I would have the World title merge with the WWE title so that there would only be one world champion. To do this I would have CM Punk challenge Cody Rhodes in a title for title match at the Royal Rumble. In an effort to mix things up and give the audience something fresh and unexpected, I would have CM Punk win the match becoming the new WWE World Champion.
Royal Rumble Match (Mens)
To kick off the AJ Styles year long retirement tour I would, hopefully, shock the world, and have AJ Styles win the mens Royal Rumble match. AJ has never won the Royal Rumble before, but he did make his WWE debut in the Royal Rumble match, so I think this would be a fitting way to kick start his retirement tour. This would put AJ into the main event of Wrestlemania as well which is something I think he should do before he retires. As the match ends and AJ points up to the Wrestlemania sign and the fireworks go off, I would have them hit CM Punk's entrance music, and have Punk make his way to the ring with both title belts over his shoulders. I would want the Royal Rumble event to end with AJ Styles face to face with CM Punk who currently holds both title belts in a preview of what will be the main event of Wrestlemania (Sunday).
Raw - AJ Styles (Intercontinental Championship)
The following night on Raw I would have AJ Styles win the Intercontinental championship, a belt I don’t believe AJ has ever won before. This should make AJ Styles a ‘grand slam champion’ just like John Cena. I would presumably have AJ hold the title until Wrestlemania, or possibly Elimination Chamber. He could hold the belt until Wrestlemania and then surrender it after he wins the WWE Championship from CM Punk. Or he could drop the title at Elimination Chamber, or possibly even Wrestlemania (Saturday). My first choice would be to have him drop the belt in an epic match to Logan Paul, I guess my next choice would be the returning Austin Theory. They need the push, defeating AJ and winning the title would give, and either could win with the help of the Vision protecting AJ for his Wrestlemania main event match.
Smackdown - Gunther (United States Championship)
Meanwhile, what to do with Gunther after he made John Cena tap out in his retirement match. All this heat shouldn’t go to waste, but I do not want to put Gunther in the main event picture at this time. Instead, I would have Gunther come out in similar colourful John Cena gear, however, instead of ‘never give up’ catch phrase it should say ‘tap like a bitch’ or something similar. I would have Gunther win the United States championship belt on Smackdown, then each week on Smackdown from now until Wrestlemania, Gunther would come out and issue a John Cena like open challenge to anyone in the back for a shot at his US title. Each week Gunther would make another wrestler tap out just like he did to John Cena.
The ultimate pay off for this run would be a final match at Wrestlemania when Cody Rhodes steps up to accept Gunther’s open challenge, only Cody would not come to the ring alone, in his corner he would bring out a returning John Cena, who would only be there to act as his manager, not a wrestler. Cena would not get involved in the match to help Cody win, but he would be there to keep the fight fair and clean. Of course as Cody is winning the match Gunther’s helper Ludwig would come out to interfere, however, this is when Cena would get involved, preventing him from passing the belt to Gunther, and instead giving him an attitude adjustment through the announce table to a huge pop. Cody would hit his triple cross-rhodes finisher, then instead of going for the cover, would look over at Cena, then hit Gunter with an attitude adjustment, before locking him into the STFU and making Gunther tap like a bitch right in front of Cena. The ultimate revenge for Cena and pay off for Gunther’s heat. Cody, the American Nightmare, would now be the new United States Champion, which I believe would also make him a grand slam champion.
Elimination Chamber (Mens)
Before Wrestlemania, CM Punk would defend his new WWE Championship inside the elimination chamber. Cody Rhodes would use this as his rematch since losing the title at the Royal Rumble as those two would start the match. Locked inside the four pods would ideally be the biggest stars in the WWE making this one of the most epic matches in WWE history: Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, hopefully Randy Orton, and maybe Gunther or Seth Rollins. I would prefer to keep Gunther in a separate match to continue his US open challenge run rather than include him in the chamber, but I would need both Orton and Rollins to be able to return from their current injuries to take part in this match.
In this match, the goal is for CM Punk to retain his title to go into the main event of Wrestlemania against AJ Styles, who I would have doing guest commentary during this match. The other goal I would have would be for Cody to be so badly destroyed in this match he could be written off TV until he makes a surprise return at Wrestlemania to accept Gunther’s open challenge to a huge pop. Therefore, Cody should be taking the brunt of the abuse in this match, he should take everyone’s finish, and he should be overly destroyed by Brock Lesnar who should target him specifically. Perhaps he doesn’t even get pinned, but has to leave the match due to injury.
Another match I would like to possibly set up for Wrestlemania would be Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns. It could be a number one contenders match, with the winner getting a title shot in the main event of Summer Slam possibly. To set that up I would have Brock pin Reigns to eliminate him, then afterwards have Reigns refuse to leave and attack Lesnar either beating him so badly he gets eliminated next, or as the door is opened for Reigns to exit he attacks Lesnar dragging him out of the chamber with him and beating him all the way to the back. This could give Brock a great complaint afterwards that he was technically never eliminated in the chamber and should therefore be owed another title shot. This number one contender’s match at Wrestlemania could even be a fatal four way with Orton and Rollins included as well. A long term goal is still to get a title feud down the road with Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton, but I think in the immediate future, following Wrestlemania there needs to be feuds planned for the new WWE Champion AJ Styles, and the former champion CM Punk before getting the title back to Cody.
Post Wrestlemania Landscape
- AJ Styles would be the WWE champion on his retirement tour, until at least Summer Slam.
- Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes would be the US champion, having Cena like open challenges.
- Logan Paul should be the new IC champion, and I would possibly have him win MITB.
This all sets up any number of feuds for AJ with the likes of Lesnar, Reigns, Orton, Rollins, a rematch with Punk, and the looming threat of Logan Paul who defeated AJ for the IC title waiting to cash in on him.
Overall, I would like to see AJ defeat Punk in a rematch, then go on to defeat Rollins, Orton, and even Reigns in title matches. Possibly even Cody Rhodes in a title match as well. The idea being to put over AJ on his retirement tour as unbeatable, until he ultimately loses to Brock Lesnar at Summer Slam. With Logan Paul always lurking at ringside waiting for his moment to strike, the opportunity never presents itself as AJ keeps winning, then when he loses Paul does not want to risk cashing in on the new champion Lesar. Styles would call out Paul for this, calling him a coward, too afraid to cash in, so AJ challenges him to a match for his MITB briefcase, and AJ wins. Then proving his point that he is not afraid to cash in, AJ would cash in on Lesnar down the road to win his title back.
Down the road, an ultimate shift I would like to see is Randy Orton taking over on a major run. Orton needs to start his quest to break Cena’s record, stating that he will win more championships than anyone in history. Orton will take shortcuts and cut corners turning heel along the way. What I would love to see is Batista return, not as an in ring wrestler, but as Orton’s manager, always in his corner helping him win his matches, helping him win the WWE Championship, and hold onto it for a major run. Currently Orton is tied with Triple H at 14 world titles, so this win would allow him to pass Triple H, one step behind Ric Flair. What a perfect spot for the member of evolution to be. With Triple H running the WWE as an authority figure, he could either help Orton or try to stand in his way. Similarly, Flair could make an appearance along the way as well, either helping Orton win a title or causing him to lose his title. Regardless, Flair should be present when Orton wins his 16th world title, if it gets to that point. Similarly, if Orton ever reached 17 it should be fighting against Cody who should have John Cena in his corner and present for that match.
